Kevin D. Best

Associate vice president, Brand Marketing

As associate vice president of Brand Marketing, Kevin D. Best leads the creative, digital, video and media teams for VCU. In this role, Kevin shapes creative marketing content that elevates VCU's brand prominence.

Prior to joining VCU in 2021, Kevin led advertising and visual identity for the National Basketball Association, served as Brand Manager for State Farm Insurance, and spent over 20 years in the ad agency business leading national brands. Kevin earned his master's degree in communications from VCU and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia.

Jennifer P. Carmean

As assistant vice president for content and storytelling, Jennifer P. Carmean leads the division's content team, connecting the paid, earned, social and owned opportunities through storytelling and content strategy. Through Jennifer's leadership, the content team identifies, plans and amplifies the stories that best showcase and enhance VCU's brand and reputation.

Jennifer joined the VCU community in 1994 to pursue her undergraduate degree in psychology. While she began as an hourly employee working between classes to make ends meet, she quickly found VCU was the right home to build her career in higher education communications. Her leadership and contributions have earned a multitude of awards from regional and national organizations. In 2017, she received the VCU President's Outstanding Achievement Award in recognition of her accomplishments that resulted in significant benefits to the institution. If you can't find Jennifer at work, you will find her in the pool or adventuring with her husband and children.

As director for strategic initiatives, Camille Coy leads the division’s efforts around diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, as well as heads the administration department. In her role, she helps implement strategies that positively impact the way EMC works and how the division connects with both its internal and external stakeholder groups.

Camille has been with the division since 2016 and has a decades-long career as a communications professional. A graduate of UVA and VCU, she has a bachelor’s in English and a master’s in business administration.

As the Assistant Vice President of VCU Health Enterprise Communications, Carissa D. Etters leads a team responsible for the development and execution of executive and internal communications, including strategic communications planning for enterprise-wide initiatives.

Carissa is a 20+-year veteran of the communications profession with a career that started in broadcast journalism. She first moved into health care communications in eastern North Carolina with a focus on media relations and internal communications. Carissa joined VCU in 2014. She earned a bachelor of science degree from East Carolina University, in Greenville, N.C.

As vice president for Enterprise Marketing and Communications at Virginia Commonwealth University and VCU Health, Grant Heston leads VCU’s brand, marketing, communications and reputation strategy.

Before joining VCU in 2021, Grant spent 12 years at the University of Central Florida as vice president for Communications and Marketing and Chief of Staff. Heston earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Florida, a master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Central Florida, and also studied in the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. However, Grant credits his experience as a volunteer Little League baseball and softball coach for his most valuable leadership lessons.

As the director of shared services in the Controller’s Office at Virginia Commonwealth University, Monica Jackson manages the university’s shared services unit, which provides financial services and support to the Finance and Administration, Equity and Access, and Enterprise Marketing and Communications units.

As the executive director of university events and strategic operations, Amy Saucier Kelley provides strategic leadership that integrates event strategy, executive communications, and operational excellence across Virginia Commonwealth University.

With more than 20 years of experience in public administration, she oversees the planning and execution of presidential, board, and enterprise events—ensuring every engagement advances VCU’s mission, priorities, and brand. Amy also leads strategic operations initiatives that strengthen organizational coordination, guide enterprise communications planning, and enhance the university’s overall effectiveness through cross-functional collaboration.

Since joining VCU in 2014, Amy has held leadership roles in both the Office of the President and Enterprise Marketing and Communications, producing more than 100 annual events—from commencements and groundbreakings to national policy visits—and earning multiple CASE and PRSA awards for excellence in higher education communications.

Before her tenure at VCU, she served as director of legislative and government affairs in the Office of the Attorney General of Virginia and as a legislative advisor to numerous state lawmakers. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Richmond and is completing a Master of Public Administration at VCU.

Mike Porter

As associate vice president of Public Relations, Michael R. Porter, APR, leads the public relations responsibilities of VCU and VCU Health. Mike oversees day-to-day operation of the public relations unit, including external communications, media relations and issues management. He also coordinates strategic communications planning and execution for universitywide efforts, including student life, community engagement and inclusive excellence.

Mike joined VCU in December 2005 after a career of more than 20 years in broadcast journalism. He earned an Accreditation in Public Relations in 2012 and is a member of the Public Relations Society of America.
